Suwon 2002 World Cup Stadium

Busan l Park players warming up

If you're in Suwon, it's worth your while to check out the World Cup Stadium. I mean come on- Suwon is Korea's leading soccer town. The stadium has a seating capacity of 43,288, and was built over the span of 4 years, completed in 2001 at a cost of $190 million US.

Thanks to a friend's season tickets, I caught the Suwon Samsung Bluewings Vs. Busan game this afternoon. He was right. The Bluewings players are fierce! They are 3 time champions of the K-league and feature Ann Jung-Hwan who is the David Beckham of Korea. The team was greeted by thousands of screaming fans.

Suwon scraped by with a final score of 1-0. The wind was biting cold and we didn't wear enough clothes, but it was a good game; there were a lot of close calls and foul plays met by angry booing. One entire wing was packed with Bluewings supporters waving flags, chanting and setting off firecrackers:

What, no popcorn? Where are the hot dogs? Kimbap, hard-boiled eggs, and dry soup to mix are healthier options, but I yearned for greasy stadium food.

One standard? The price of food was inflated: 5 USD each, for a Cass beer and roll of kimbap--

As a Classics major, I have to warn you, the 300 is NOT historical drama, take it as a pure entertainment movie and you're ready to enjoy it to the fullest.

Reason is,(WARNING: THIS IS BORING) the movie makes the 'Asian Horde' (Asians from Asia-Minor of course) more of Sino-Africans than actual Persians (Persians are Aryans from Caucassus... And they had better morals than Greeks ever did) And the movie completely ignores 7000 other Greeks who were there and 700 others who stayed with the 300 Spartans to fight to the death.

Sorry about the boring facts, but hey, if not a Classicist, who else is going to mention them? :P

Snore. If you wanted an accurate, historical portrayal of the Battle of Thermoplyae, there's always the History Channel. 300 is an exercise in badassity.

I recently reviewed 300 on my blog: http://www.ededition.com/movie-review-300/

Do you know which teams you're seeing for the soccer game? I saw Korea play Togo at the World Cup this past summer in Germany.

Ed- nice score (to catch the game.) That must have been amazing.

Send me the URL to your site, again. I can't click on your name to get there- I'd like to read the review before I see it tomorrow.

Fox- thanks for your historical insight! i'll go anticipating brawny men, swords, blood and ,"hwah," "hwah." Maybe then I'll be satisfied.

Hi Eva,

The price of the stadium seems a little on the low side. Where were all the fans? The stadium seemed rather empty.

Hope you enjoy the flick. I will be there at 10 a.m. to beat the rush tomorrow. It's funny that so many people are getting bent out of shape over a movie based on a graphic novel and not the actual historical battle--but who really writes history anyway? Also, the movie was shot in Montreal on soundstage with only a few live actors. Most of the film is green screen, but it still looks fantastic.

I can't wait 'til May 4th. Here's a link to 7 1/2 minutes of SPIDER-MAN 3. It looks awesome.

Too bad Harry Potter and Pirates don't have longer previews.
